This painting is a response to the idea that successful artists are deemed “talented.” I painted this in a period of intense growth in my very early career. I was told that my positive trajectory was fueled by my talent, as if I had just gotten lucky with artistic skill at birth. I felt that this trivialized my dedication and passion for my work. I began thinking a lot about the idea of making your own luck, and I still reflect on that often.
